Title of painting: Occupation
Name of artist: Pawel Kuczynski
Year produced: C: 2008
Country Poland
Context: Pawel Kuczynski created this painting based on economic, social, political, and war tactics that are being represented in today’s society. He criticizes military and their immature standpoints on war through this. The painting is simple, contrasted with a few colors, so you can focus on the true message rather than the actual beauty of it. He wanted to portray that even the smartest people that we let protect our country do unintelligent acts that can cause us to be in danger. Pawel Kuczynski believes that war cannot always be our scapegoat when deciding what is right for our nation, but creating peace throughout countries should always be in our military’s mindset.
Artist: Pawel Kuczynski was born 1976, Szczecin, Poland. He lived in Poland and attended the Academy of Fine Arts in the directions of graphics, up until 2004. So far he has one a 102 awards and honors. He has received, what he believes the most famous award, the “Eric” from Association of Polish Cartoonists. His artwork deals with much more serious themes such as poverty, greed, politics and mortality.
Analysis: This painting represents a piece of art because as many artist one has a specific thing they do for their painting to have a type of meaning that they want the viewers to look at. As Pawel (the artist) he talks about war and freedom. What I think the he is trying to say is that no matter how many wars or battles we have their will be no peace at all as the outcome. As, people go off to war and the families lose someone close to them and they feel hurt inside. War doesn’t bring peace to anyone it just creates a bigger mess for everyone living in that environment. War encourages others that fighting in battle is always the answer which is not and that is not okay.
Theme: In this painting the artist represents that peace is not an option but war always is. As you can see a soldier is debating to have war or not to have war. This immature act is the reason why war is an everyday thing. He uses a child like game to decide to have war rather than thinking out the consequences. The soldier is picking off feathers from a white dove. which represents purity. Purity in our nation is being lost because of the militaries laziness to resolve things in a more mature and civil way. The real question you might want to think about when looking at this painting is, do you want your country being protected by people who only think about war or people who want to restore the peace in our countries?
