Other than his imprint on the painting techniques known as chromoluminarism and pointillism, Seurat had one other legacy, a son.
Context: “Bathers At Asnières” was painted in France in 1884. Seurat painted it during the age of imperialism, he was twenty-four years old at the time. Imperialism was the time where stronger countries took over weak countries with intent of dominating the political, social, and economical life of the people of the nation. After completing the art piece Seurat applied to the Jury of Salon to have it exhibited but it was rejected. The painting wasn't recognized until the death of Seurat. Now, it is displayed in the National Gallery in London.
Theme: The painting expresses the universal theme of peace because of it’s peaceful setting. The people in the picture are relaxing and enjoying the view of the surroundings. There is no part of this picture that does not show peace. Enjoyment, relaxation, and appreciation are all interpretations of peace found in the painting. It’s message for society is to embrace, respect, and appreciate the simple things around you. If you do these things you will be at peace with not only yourself, but everyone around you. The peace will bring you happiness.
Analysis: Georges Seurat’s “Bathers At Asnières” illustrates people enjoying a day at the river. The message of peace is found in the connection between the background and the foreground, the middleground plays a minor part in the message. In the background of the image you can see smoke and a small city full of factories squished together, in the foreground you see people spread out doing different things by the water. All the people are doing realistic things; laying down, slouching over, or standing in the water, this gives a feel of harmony in the painting. In further connection to the message of peace the people’s skin is pale, while the things around them are colorful. This representing a feel of a dull and simple lifestyle, the colors surrounding create emphasis. Lastly, the boats in the middleground represent the shift between the busy city life to the relaxing bathers.
