Curator's Note: Following an organizational mix-up, Group 17 agreed to recreate this painting, their second choice, after writing an exhibit guide for painting #27 Child with Dove. Their complete guide can be found here. We thank them for their flexibility and good sportsmanship.
Title: The Moon
Artist: Tarsila do Amaral
Year: 1928
Country: Brazil
The Moon is composed of "savage mysterious images". It is considered to be close to surrealism, but is categorized as landscape. This painting expresses peace through it's water, moon, and sky. Water can be very calming and relaxing therefore it symbolizes peace. The sky and its moon are symbolic to peace, because the sky is infinite and never ending, you can't see anything but black and a few glimmers of light from the stars. Then there's the moon which is a bright, beautiful sphere casting a light down on Earth which is very peaceful. The sky and all its accessories are infinite and mysterious which can be very peaceful.
