Title of painting: “Peace”
Name of artist: David Alfaro Siqueiros
Year produced: 1961
Country of origin: Mexico
Context: Peace is a neutral painting with many dim colors. No harsh lines and easy strokes were used to create this painting. David used black after shades to create a shadow in most of the main images. As well as the the hand, flower, and the word “PAZ”, they all have lighter colors to create that effect. The fact that this painting has the more neutral colors automatically gives it that more peaceful tone.
Artist: David Alfaro Siqueiros was born in 1896, his original given name being Jose de Jesus Alfaro Siqueiros. David was proven to be born in the city of Chihuahua, Mexico and to have been raised in Irapuato, Guanajuato. He is best known for his paintings and mural work. Other than being an artist Siqueiros was very well into politics and was a Marxist-Leninist who supported Stalin. He also won the Lenin Peace Prize, which commemorates those that have “strengthened peace among comrades”. David was in the Mexican Mural and Social Realism movement. David Alfaro Siqueiros eventually died January of 1974 at the age of 77.
Analysis: In the painting Peace created by David Alfaro, there is a rose being held by a hand. The rose is held directly centered under the words “Paz”. The colors scheme in this painting includes browns, reds, pinks. I believe the color scheme was used to represent and contradict the meaning of peace. David Alfaro also served on the general staff of the Mexican army during the revolution in Mexican from the 1914-1922, so the words PAZ painted in the white over the red and brown background can represent his definition of peace throughout the war.
Theme: The theme of this art piece is peace as it is written on the actual painting. David Alfaro Siqueiros painting techniques on this painting give off that the hand is offering peace with the flower as the peace offering. David was politically involved with the war and had many opinions and this painting was a message to the public. The colors and the objects throughout the painting match well with what David is trying to say.
